Guide To Atlanta Sex Addiction Resources
I've worked for years with clients desperately struggling to get a handle on sexual behavior they can't seem to manage in spite of negative consequences and a desire to change. This unhealthy yet repetitive sexual behavior can take the form of compulsive masturbation, pornography, online relationships, commercial sex, affairs, anonymous sex or many other types of obsessive sexual behavior.
The Atlanta metropolitan has almost 50 12-step recovery group meetings that provide confidential, free and powerful assistance for people who find that their sexual drive is ruling them rather than the other way around. There are several different 'fellowships' such as Sex Addicts Anonymous (SAA) (the group I most often recommend), Sexaholics Anonymous (SA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Sexual Compulsives Anonymous (SCA). Each of these groups began in different parts of the country to provide the same benefit to sex addicts that Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) has been providing to alcoholics for decades. Although there are a few differences between them they all share many common characteristics. An easy way to find any of these meetings in Atlanta is simply to go to this web page that provides the location of all of these meetings that meet in various parts of town every day of the week.
A few of these meetings are designed specifically for spouses or other partners of sex addicts. People who discover that they are in a relationship with a sex addict often feel very betrayed, confused, isolated, angry, and ashamed, and often don't feel like they can share their burden with family members or friends. Attending these 12-step meetings for partners of sex addicts can be an invaluable resource for support, understanding and guidance during troubling times. The same link above gives information about these meeting locations.
In addition to the individual counseling, participation in couples counseling or group therapy can be important avenues to regaining sexual integrity and healing damaged lives. There are a number of other excellent therapists across the Atlanta area who offer these services in addition to myself, and I'm happy to provide specific recommendations on request.
Finally, some people find that it is extremely useful to participate in more intensive therapy to uncover and process deeper or more pervasive issues that can get in the way of a balanced and healthy life. While some inpatient facilities nationwide offer excellent long-term (30 day or longer) treatment options (I will be providing a list of these soon), week-long "intensives" are an increasingly popular and cost-effective treatment option. While two of the best are located within a day's drive of Atlanta (Gentle Path in Hattiesburg and Onsite Workshops near Nashville), an outstanding local resource that is on par with either of these programs is Hudson Consulting, an extremely experienced and caring husband-and-wife therapist team who offer a five-day "Restoring Healthy Sexuality" workshop (as well as individually tailored intensives) on their peaceful horse farm just outside of Atlanta in nearby Dallas Georgia.
So if anyone is reading this because of a desire to get help for sexual behavior that feels addictively out of control, the good news is that lots of help is available to you locally. For more assistance give me a call at (404) 345-1570 or email me at bill@billherring.info.
