Transformation Through Conversation
The most effective counseling and psychotherapy almost always involves intimate, safe and meaningful conversation (although there is a growing trend toward including (other powerful and effective therapeutic techniques that don't require much talking). In my many years of experience I've talked with clients about more topics than I could ever list. But there is one conversation I respect and value above all others: the one that a client has never had before with anyone in his or her life.
This isn't easy to do for several reasons. For one thing, researchers have determined that over 90% of anything a person thinks or says is "repeat": he or she has thought or said it before, often many times. Developing a line of thought that is truly unique and has the potential to transform your life requires a combination of conscious interaction, creativity, skill and inspiration. Gold doesn't just sit on the surface of the soil waiting to be picked up; it's hidden deep and has to be mined and recognized for its value, and a "conversation unlike any other" has the ability to make that possibility a reality.
The relief, delight, insight and transformation that can occur by having an extremely personal and meaningful conversation is often liberating, wondrous and magical. Everybody has one or more deeply personal subjects they just cannot seem to be able to reveal to anyone. It may be something from the past, a trauma that has left its mark, a disturbing fantasy, or some fear or dread that can barely be named. Getting these out is like removing a thorn from the soul.
I am so very honored to regularly have discussions with clients that bring new insights they never before considered and which shine a useful light on some very old and stubborn problem. Any one of these may be the most important and unique conversation the person sitting across from me has experienced in years, decades or even a lifetime. The deep satisfaction and immense benefit derived from such moments simply cannot be measured.
It can seem so difficult to find someone trustworthy enough to talk about the deepest troubles, but I strongly encourage you to take that step, even if it's not with me. It can help you find great relief, gain invaluable insight and Experience A Life You Deeply Deserve.
